Cell Phone Use and Monticello School Buses
Parents often wonder about the cell phone policy on the buses in Monticello School District 882.

Our policy mirrors the school policy: using cell phones on the bus is prohibited.  However, the bus drivers have been instructed to maintain a "don't-ask-don't-tell" policy.

Why have a policy at all?
As cell phone use increases, so do problems associated with them.  We have students engaged in bullying behavior, others taking and sending inappropriate pictures, and other misbehavior.

During a Safe Schools meeting this winter, cell phone use was a hot topic.  Said one attendee, "We're giving kids who need boundaries devices with no boundaries."  Setting and enforcing useage rules in the schools and on the buses helps define boundaries for our students.

What is the actual policy?
If a student is disruptive with the cell phone and the bus driver needs to intervene, the driver will confiscate the cell phone.  The first time we will keep it one day, the second time a week, the third time a month, and the fourth time we will keep it for the remainder of the year.  This is the same policy as the high school uses when students use their phones in the education wings.

Please feel free to contact us if you have thoughts or suggestions about cell phone use.
Rule of the Week Program:

Every Tuesday we publish a new "Rule of the Week" at our blog.  The same day, the elementary schools announce the rule of the week and the bus drivers post it in their buses.

Rule of the Year:

Thumbs UP for Safety!

Hoglund Transportation cooperates with the school district to provide a comprehensive school bus safety training program for students in grades Kindergarten through ten.

Training begins at Kindgergarten Count-Down each August when new Kindergarten students and their parents listen to a short presentation about the student's first experience ever with mass transportation, followed by the first bus ride.

At school, teachers introduce school bus safety training topics in an age appropriate manner.  Each students sees a school bus safety training dvd we created in 2007.  Within the first couple weeks of school, our staff brings a bus to the school and presents a short training session designed to review concepts first presented in the dvd.  During the training session, we discuss rules inside the bus, practice evacuating the bus out the rear door, and teach students safe crossing procedures.
